Menthol Side Effects

This drug is used to treat minor aches and pains in the joints and muscles (such as arthritis, backache, sprains). When used, menthol makes the skin feel cool at first and later warm. Your attention is diverted from the underlying aches and pains in your muscles and joints by these sensations on your skin.

Only apply this medication to the skin. Wash and dry the affected area. Apply the patch to the afflicted area after removing the backing. Applying the patch to skin that is inflamed or wounded is not advised (such as skin that is cut, scraped, sunburned, infected, or has a rash). For up to 12 hours, leave the patch on the afflicted region.

Before taking a bath, remove the patch, and do not reapply it immediately. Unless the doctor instructs you to bandage or wrap the region where the patch is put, avoid doing so. Never use a heating pad or other form of heat on the patch. The chance of adverse effects could rise if you do it. After handling the patch, thoroughly wash your hands. Do not get this medicine in your mouth, nose, or eyes. If the medication does get in those areas, flush it out thoroughly with water. Fold the used patch with the sticky sides together after removing each patch, then discard it in the trash out of the reach of kids and animals.
